TALK #5: GENDER, ART AND CULTURE

19th of August 2016
2pm-4pm
Kvindemuseet

Gender, art and culture

Awareness and debate on gender issues is everywhere important and present. In the new music scene in Sweden, this results in decisive action on an organisational level, whereas in Denmark, on the other hand, there is a conscious resistance to officially going down the path of gender quotas or other such top-down measures.

This afternoon, together with active players in the Danish and Swedish new music scenes, we will discuss the different positions within this debate. What are the pros and cons with gender quotas? Should the state impose such regulations? Or should art and artists be free to work through the issues independently?

This debate is not exclusively confined to the arts. It also reflects more general tendencies nationally. We will therefore ask, why art apparently automatically seems to mirror national political discourses. Is this an unavoidable and inherent characteristic of state funded art, or rather, is art’s most noble task to speak an international language that transcends these local political discourses?
